Who is in the Baseball Playoffs?

If you’re a baseball fan, you’re probably wondering who’s in the playoffs. Here’s a quick rundown of the teams that are still in the running.

Who is in the Baseball Playoffs?

American League

There are four teams remaining in the American League playoffs: the New York Yankees, the Houston Astros, the Minnesota Twins, and the Tampa Bay Rays.

Cleveland Indians

The Cleveland Indians are currently in first place in the American League Central division with a record of 91-71. The Indians clinched a spot in the playoffs on September 28th, when they defeated the Detroit Tigers. The Indians are currently in the AL wild-card game, where they will face off against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Houston Astros

The Houston Astros are an American professional baseball team based in Houston, Texas. The Astros compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division, having moved to the division in 2013 after spending their first 51 seasons in the National League (NL). The Astros have played their home games at Minute Maid Park since 2000.

The Astros were established as the Houston Colt .45s and entered the National League as an expansion team in 1962 along with the New York Mets. The current name—reflecting Houston’s role as the control center of the U.S. space program—was adopted three years later when they moved into the Astrodome, which was then still referred to as the Harris County Domed Stadium. The Astros played in that stadium from its opening in 1965 until 1999. Since 2000, their home ballpark has been Minute Maid Park (originally named Enron Field).

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The team have won nine World Series championships, tied for the third-most of any MLB team, and they are one of two MLB franchises to win four times or more, the other being the rival Chicago Cubs. The first modern World Series was played between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Americans in 1903.

The Red Sox’ history has also been marked by the team’s intense rivalry with the Yankees, arguably the fiercest and most historic in North American professional sports. The Boston Red Sox are owned by Fenway Sports Group, which also owns Liverpool F.C. of the Premier League in England.

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the Baltimore Orioles team that currently plays in the AL), one of eight charter franchises of the AL and then as a minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals until 1903, when Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City.

National League

As the regular season comes to a close, we have a good idea of who will be in the playoffs. In the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers have clinched the best record in the majors and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Atlanta Braves have also clinched a spot, as have the Chicago Cubs. The Milwaukee Brewers are on the brink of clinching a spot, while the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are still in the hunt.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers are a professional baseball team based in Los Angeles, California. The Dodgers compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. Established in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York, the team moved to Los Angeles before the 1958 season. They played for four seasons at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before moving to Dodger Stadium in 1962.

Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals are an American professional baseball team based in Washington, D.C. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) East division. From 2005 to 2007, the team played in RFK Stadium; since 2008 their home ballpark has been Nationals Park, located on South Capitol Street in the Southeast quadrant of D.C., near the Anacostia River.

The Nationals are the eighth major league franchise to be based in Washington, D.C., and the first since 1971. The current franchise was founded in 1969 as the Montreal Expos, part of the MLB expansion. The Expos were purchased by Major League Baseball in 2002, and renamed the Nationals immediately thereafter. They played their home games at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium until moving to Nationals Park on April 4, 2008.

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are an American professional baseball club based in Chicago, Illinois. The Cubs compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) Central division, where they are the defending World Series champions. The team plays its home games at Wrigley Field, located on the city’s North Side. The Cubs are one of two major league teams in Chicago; the other, the Chicago White Sox, is a member of the American League (AL) Central division.

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks, often shortened as the D-backs, are an American professional baseball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division, having previously played in the NL West from 1998 to 2010.
