What’s Indie Rock Music?

We take a look at the definition of Indie Rock music, and explore its origins and key characteristics.

What is Indie Rock Music?

There is no single definition of “indie rock,” but the term usually refers to rock music that is made by independent (i.e., not major label) artists. Indie rock often has an alternative or underground bent, and it may be influenced by a variety of genres, including punk, indie pop, noise rock, and college rock.

In the 1980s and early 1990s, “indie rock” was used to describe the music made by small, independently-owned record labels (hence the “indie” part of the name). The most famous example of an indie rock label from this era is probably Seattle’s Sub Pop Records, which was home to Nirvana and other grunge bands.

Today, the term “indie rock” is most often used to describe a particular style of music that developed in the 1990s and 2000s. This style is characterized by a DIY aesthetic, a focus on songcraft over showmanship, and a rejection of mainstream commercialism. Some of the best-known indie rock bands include Pavement, Spoon, Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie, and Arcade Fire.

The Origins of Indie Rock Music

Indie rock music is a genre of alternative rock that emerged in the 1980s. The term “indie rock” is used to describe a wide variety of musical styles, from garage rock and punk rock to alternative and experimental rock. Indie rock is characterized by its do-it-yourself attitude, DIY ethic, and independent approach to recording and distribution.

Indie rock bands are usually signed to independent record labels, which are often owned and operated by the band members themselves. Indie rock bands typically eschew major label contracts and commercial success in favor of artistic freedom and creative control. Many indie rock bands have developed cult followings among music fans, and some have achieved international fame.

The Characteristics of Indie Rock Music

Indie rock is a genre of rock music that originated in the United States and United Kingdom in the 1970s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock. As grunge and punk rock became widely accepted by mainstream audiences in the 1990s, indie rock developed a variety of subgenres and related styles.

Characteristics associated with indie rock include DIY ethic, sympathy for independent or underground movements, support for artistic experimentation, and an emphasis on live performance. Indie rock emphasizes personal authenticity over technical ability, with most artists writing or performing their own material.

The Popularity of Indie Rock Music

In recent years, indie rock music has become increasingly popular. This genre of music is characterized by its independent production and underground appeal. Indie rock is often thought of as being counter-cultural, and many indie rock bands have a DIY ethic.

One of the most appealing things about indie rock is that it provides an alternative to the mainstream music industry. Indie rock bands are often unsigned or on small independent labels. This allows them to maintain creative control over their music and image.

Indie rock is also known for its eclectic taste. Many indie rock bands draw from a wide range of musical influences, including punk, folk, and experimental genres. This variety can be appealing to listeners who are tired of the same old sounds.

If you’re interested in exploring indie rock music, there are a few things you should know. First, don’t be afraid to branch out and try new things. There’s a lot of great music out there, so don’t limit yourself to one genre or style. Second, keep an open mind – there’s a lot of different sounds within the indie rock world, so you’re sure to find something you like. And finally, don’t be afraid to support your favorite bands – buying their albums and seeing them live helps keep them going!

The Influence of Indie Rock Music

Indie rock music is a genre of popular music that originated in the 1970s. Indie rock is characterized by a DIY ethic, independence from major record labels, and a preference for underground or “indie” venues. Indie rock music has been described as “a distinctly American form of pop music” that is “sonically adventurous, stylistically varied, and sometimes politically engaged.”

The term “indie rock” was coined in the late 1970s by British journalist Caroline Coon, who used it to describe punk-influenced bands on independent record labels. By the end of the decade, indie rock had come to include different subgenres such as post-punk, jangle pop, and noise pop. In the 1990s, grunge and Britpop bands broke into the mainstream, and indie rock reached commercial success in the US with the release of albums such as Nirvana’s Nevermind (1991) and Radiohead’s OK Computer (1997).

Since the 2000s, indie rock has been noted for its eclectic style and DIY aesthetic. This aesthetic is often achieved through the use of lo-fi production values, DIY ethic (such as self-recording and self-releasing), and an overall aesthetic of honesty and authenticity. Indie rock music has also been associated with a number of social and political movements such as anti-consumerism, anti-war activism, counterculture, feminism, LGBT rights activism, hipsterism/post-punk revivalism, and working class youth culture.

The Future of Indie Rock Music

Indie rock music is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom in the 1970s. Indie rock is characterized by a DIY ethic, which includes a focus on independent record labels, DIY venues, and artist-owned studios. Indie rock music has been described as “a style of alternative rock that rose to prominence in the mid-1990s and has continued to grow in popularity since then.”

The term “indie rock” was originally used to describe release labels and musical performers who were not signed to major record companies. In the 1990s, as the popularity of alternative rock grew, “indie” began to be used as a catch-all term for any band that was not part of the mainstream. Today, “indie rock” is used to describe both the music and the culture surrounding it.

There is no one definitive answer to the question “What is indie rock?” because the genre is constantly evolving. However, there are some common elements that are often found in indie rock music, such as a focus on singable melodies, DIY production values, and an independent spirit.

Some of the best indie rock bands include The Strokes, Modest Mouse, The Decemberists, Arcade Fire, and Vampire Weekend.

The Worst Indie Rock Bands

Don’t worry, we’ll get to the good stuff eventually. But first, a necessary disclaimer: the following list is comprised of what we personally believe to be the worst indie rock bands of all time. It is in no way meant to be definitive, and we fully expect that many of you will disagree with our choices. That’s perfectly fine! Feel free to share your own picks for the worst in the comments section below.

Now, on to the list…

1. The Strokes

We know, we know. The Strokes are one of the most iconic and influential bands of the past two decades. But that doesn’t change the fact that they’re also one of the worst. Their music is bland and derivative, their lyrics are painfully pretentious, and their live shows are notoriously terrible. We can think of few bands that deserve less hype than The Strokes.

2. Arcade Fire

Much like The Strokes, Arcade Fire are a band that vastly outstays their welcome after a few listens. Their music is relentlessly dreary and downbeat, and frontman Win Butler is an insufferable bore who takes himself far too seriously. We’re all for earnestness in music, but Arcade Fire just don’t have anything interesting to say.

3. Vampire Weekend

A lot of people seem to think Vampire Weekend are clever or witty or something, but we just don’t see it. Their music is ridiculously twee and precious, and frontman Ezra Koenig comes across as try-hard and insincere. If you’re looking for music to help you feel cool and hip, look elsewhere; Vampire Weekend will only make you feel old and out-of-touch.

The Worst Indie Rock Songs

There are plenty of bad indie rock songs out there. In fact, some would say that the genre is plagued by them. So, what makes a bad indie rock song? Well, there are a few things that can make an indie rock song go from good to bad.

One of the biggest problems with bad indie rock songs is that they often lack originality. This is especially true of songs that are derivative of other, more popular indie rock bands. If a band is simply copying what another band has already done, it’s unlikely that their song will be anything special.

Another issue that can make an indie rock song bad is if it’s too long. Indie rock songs often tend to be on the shorter side, and this is for a good reason. That’s because most indie rock bands don’t have the attention span to write a five-minute song that doesn’t get boring. Sometimes, a shorter song can be more impactful than a longer one.

Finally, bad lyrics can also ruin an otherwise good indie rock song. A lot of times, lyrics in bad indie rock songs will be trite and uninspired. They might also be cliche or use too many referances to other bands or pop culture artifacts. In any case, bad lyrics can definitely take away from an otherwise good song.
