It’s that time of year again! The NBA playoffs are just around the corner. Here’s a look at the teams that are in, and what to expect from them.
The Eastern Conference is made up of the Atlantic and Central divisions. The Atlantic division includes the Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors, and the Miami Heat. The Central division includes the Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, and the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Boston Celtics are an American professional basketball team based in Boston. The Celtics compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. Founded in 1946 as one of the league’s original eight teams, the team play their home games at TD Garden, which they share with the National Hockey League (NHL)’s Boston Bruins. The Celtics are one of the most successful teams in NBA history. The franchise has won the most championships in the NBA with 17, accounting for 24.6 percent of all NBA titles since 1947. As well as holding 27 consecutive winning seasons (1956–57 to 1982–83), they have posted 33 winning records in 40 seasons since 1949-50.
The Toronto Raptors are a Canadian professional basketball team based in Toronto, Ontario. The Raptors compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. They were established in 1995 as part of the NBA’s expansion into Canada, along with the Vancouver Grizzlies. When the Grizzlies relocated to Memphis, Tennessee to become the Memphis Grizzlies in 2001, the Raptors became the only Canadian-based NBA team.
The Raptors play their home games at Scotiabank Arena, which they share with the National Hockey League’s Toronto Maple Leafs. The team’s president is Masai Ujiri.
The Philadelphia 76ers are a professional basketball team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are members of the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The 76ers play their home games at the Wells Fargo Center, which they share with the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers.
The Milwaukee Bucks are an American professional basketball team based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Bucks compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Central Division. The team was founded in 1968 as an expansion team, and play at the Fiserv Forum. Former U.S. Senator Herb Kohl was the long-time owner of the team, but on April 16, 2014, a group led by billionaire hedge fund managers Wes Edens and Marc Lasry agreed to purchase a majority interest in the team from Kohl, a sale which was approved by the NBA Board of Governors on April 16, 2014. The new owners announced that they would begin seeking approval to move the franchise to a new arena somewhere in suburban Milwaukee, with intense public opposition to these plans having arisen due largely to concern over public financing for a new arena having been given legal precedent by past financing arrangements made for both Miller Park and the BMO Harris Bradley Center; these plans were ultimately put on hold in early 2017 after looking unlikely to succeed.
The Western Conference playoff race is wide open heading into the final week of the regular season. The Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, and Denver Nuggets are all within two games of each other atop the conference standings, while the Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder are right behind them. Who will ultimately secure the top seed in the West?
Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors are a professional basketball team based in Oakland, California. The Warriors compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. The Warriors have won three NBA championships, four Western Conference titles, and one NBA Finals MVP award.
The Houston Rockets are a professional basketball team based in Houston, Texas. The Rockets compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of the league’s Western Conference Southwest Division. The team plays its home games at the Toyota Center, located in Downtown Houston. The Rockets have won two NBA championships and four Western Conference titles since the franchise was established in 1967 as part of the NBA’s expansion into the Southwestern United States.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail Blazers are a professional basketball team based in Portland, Oregon. The Trail Blazers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division. The franchise was founded in 1970, and played its home games in Memorial Coliseum before moving to Moda Center in 1995. The team has advanced to the NBA Finals three times, winning the NBA championship once in 1977. Their other NBA Finals appearances were in 1990 and 1992.
Oklahoma City Thunder
The Oklahoma City Thunder are a professional basketball team based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The Thunder compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division. The team plays its home games at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
The Thunder were formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics, an NBA franchise that was relocated from Seattle, Washington to Oklahoma City in 2008 under the ownership of Clay Bennett. The SuperSonics won three Western Conference titles (1979, 1996, 1998) and one NBA title in 1979. In 2006, former Sonic owner Howard Schultz sold the SuperSonics and its Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) sister franchise, the Seattle Storm, to Bennett. By terms of the sale agreement reached between Schultz and Bennett on July 18, 2006, the Supersonics’ name and logos would remain in Seattle and be used by any future NBA team in that city. The SuperSonics name is currently used by an NBA G League team owned by OKC-based Professional Basketball Club LLC., which purchased and assumed control of Seattle’s Rainier Beach High School in 2017.
On July 6, 2008, it was announced that the team would be known as the Oklahoma City Thunder and play their home games at the Ford Center (now Chesapeake Energy Arena) until a permanent arena was built.
