The team began play in 1962 as the expansion Washington Senators and have used various names since then, including the “Washington Nationals” from 2005 to 2007. The Washington Baseballers History
The Washington Baseballers were a Major League Baseball team that played in the National League from 1892 to 1899. The franchise was based in Washington, D.C., and was the first professional baseball team in the nation’s capital. The team played its home games at National Park which was also home to Washington Senators of the American Association from 1886 to 1891.
The franchise was founded by Cornelius Vanderbilt, who owned and operated the New York Yankees from 1903 to 1915. Vanderbilt hired future Hall of Fame manager Clark Griffith to helm his new team. Griffith built a competitive squad that won four National League pennants in five years, including back-to-back World Series titles in 1924 and 1925.
After Vanderbilt’s death in 1922, Griffith continued to operate the team until he sold it to film producer Sam Goldwyn in 1925. Goldwyn then sold the team to beer magnate Jacob Ruppert in 1926. Ruppert oversaw the team’s move to Yankee Stadium and continued its tradition of winning, capturing four more World Series titles between 1927 and 1932.
Ruppert died in 1939, and control of the team passed to his son Edward. Edward sold the team to shipbuilding magnate Dan Topping in 1945. Topping, who also owned the Brooklyn Dodgers ran both teams until his death in 1966. Control of the Yankees then passed to his sons Jerry and Hal.
