The Best Electronic Dance Music of the Year

The year is coming to a close, and that means it’s time to reflect on the best electronic dance music of the year. From new artists to established acts, there was a lot of great music to choose from. Here are our picks for the best electronic dance music of the year.

House Music

House music is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in the 1980s in Chicago. The style is characterized by a repetitive four-on-the-floor beat and distinctive electronic sound. House music quickly became popular in nightclubs and on the radio in the United Kingdom, the United States, and continental Europe.

There are many subgenres of house music, including acid house, deep house, future house, tech house, and techno. House music often features samples from other genres, including soul, funk, disco, and pop.

Techno Music

Techno music is a type of electronic dance music that emerged in the late 1980s. It is characterized by a repetitive 4/4 beat and often features synthesizers, drum machines, and robotic or distorted voices. Techno is typically played in nightclubs, festivals, and warehouses.

Trance Music

Trance is a genre of electronic dance music that emerged from the British new-age music scene and the early 1990s German techno and acid house scenes. At the same time trance music was developing in Europe, the genre was also gathering a following in the Indian state of Goa. Trance music is generally characterized by a tempo lying between 110–150 bpm, repeated melodic phrases and a musical form that distinctly builds tension and elements throughout a track often culminating in 1 to 2 “peaks” or “drops”. Although trance is a genre of its own, it liberally incorporates influences from other musical styles such as techno, house, pop, chill-out, classical music, tech house, ambient and film music.

A trance refers to a state of hypnotism and lessened consciousness. This is portrayed in trance music by the mixing of layers with distinctly foreshadowed build-up and release. A common characteristic of Trance is repetition of themes (melodies), structural development (breakdowns), builds or strings of rhythmic patterns used to create an atmosphere of uplifting euphoria.

For example, imagine an endless soundscape full synth washes never ceasing combined with piano melodies every four bars which gradually become more detailed as they are embellished by other instrumentation every eight bars. This could be contrasted with frantic drumming increasing in intensity while still remaining in perfect sync with the evolving keyboard parts leading up to an almighty drop where all elements come together for an unforgettable moment before returning to the original soundscape but slightly altered permanently due to the experience.

Drum and Bass Music

Drum and bass is a type of electronic dance music that originated in the UK in the early 1990s. It is characterized by its fast tempo and often aggressive or dark sound. Drum and bass music often features heavy basslines, syncopated rhythms, and samples of amen breaks.
