America’s favorite baseball Team

The Big Unit – America’s Favorite Baseball Team is a television documentary that chronicles the history of the team. The documentary covers the team’s origins, as well as their success during the regular season and playoffs.

The Big Unit

Boston Red Sox The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox have won eight World Series championships and have played in thirteen. Founded in 1901 as one of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the franchise was awarded to Boston business tycoon Charles Taylor. The team’s home ballpark has been Fenway Park since 1912. The “Red Sox” name was chosen by Taylor after he was asked by an eastern newspaper reporter if he would change the name of his team, he declined and said, “The Pilgrims … came here on the Mayflower … I’m damn proud of it.”

The Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners are an American professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division. The Mariners play their home games at T-Mobile Park, located in the SoDo neighborhood of Seattle.

The “Mariners” name originates from the prominence of marine culture in the city of Seattle. They are nicknamed the M’s, a title featured on the team’s home uniforms since 1987. From 1987 to 2002, the team colors were navy blue and teal, but beginning in 2003, newly implemented team colors were Navy blue and northwest green. Dave Niehaus, the Mariners’ play-by-play announcer from their inception in 1977 through 2010, was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York, in 2008, becoming just the 27th broadcaster so honored.

The Mariners were created as a result of a lawsuit brought against Major League Baseball by local businessman George Argyros. In 1970, Argyros acquired the then-troubled San Diego Padres franchise for $12 million and actively sought an AL expansion franchise to compete with the cross-town Los Angeles Dodgers however, he was rebuffed by then-Commissioner Bowie Kuhn who preferred expanding within existing NL markets (adding teams in Kansas City and Milwaukee). A 1994 move by MLB to stop future franchises moving within two years of each other also put a stop to any potential moves by Argyros (who had lost interest by that point as well). As part of MLB’s commitment to keep a team in San Diego after his lawsuit threat and Kuhn’s retirement later that year, Argyros was offered ownership rights to an expansion franchise for $32 million which he accepted; it would be one of two new AL franchises for 1977 along with a reorganized Tampa Bay Area expansion team (the other existing AL teams voted against adding any more members until 1993). Construction delays on what was originally planned as Jack Murphy Stadium forced MLB to hold off awarding an NL expansion franchise to San Diego until after awarding an AL franchise to Seattle; this made Seattle a surprise pick given that most observers at the time believed that Toronto would receive one of the 1977 AL expansion franchises (as it did when it joined MLB along with Montreal four years later).

The New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are an American professional Baseball Team based in the Bronx, New York City They compete in major league baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed the Yankees in 1913.
