Get to Know the Su Baseball Roster

Get to know the 2019-2020 Su baseball roster These are the young men who will be representing Seattle University this season.

The Southern University baseball team is composed of student-athletes who are attending the school on a baseball scholarship. The roster is typically made up of freshman and sophomores, with a few upperclassmen sprinkled in. The team is coached by Head Coach Kerrick Jackson and Assistant Coach Andres Perez.

Position Players

The 2018-2019 Su baseball roster is composed of 14 Position players and 11 pitchers. Of the 14 position players, six are infielders, four are outfielders, and four are catchers. The team’s primary catcher is senior captain Emma Hopkins, who has started all but two games over the past three seasons. The other three catchers on the roster are sophomore Madelyn Durkin, junior Katelyn Driscoll, and freshman Olivia Margolis.

Starting Rotation

The Su baseball team has a strong pitching staff this season, led by a fantastic starting rotation. The top three pitchers in the rotation are seniors, and they have a lot of experience pitching in big games. The fourth pitcher in the rotation is a junior, and he has been very impressive in his first two years on the team.

The top pitcher in the rotation is senior Ace Smith. Ace is a four-year starter for the Su, and he has been one of the best pitchers in the conference over the last three years. He is a two-time All-Conference selection, and he was named the Conference Pitcher of the Year last season. Ace is a power pitcher who relies on his fastball to get hitters out. He also has a great curveball that he uses to get hitters out when they are trying to adjust to his fastball.

The second pitcher in the rotation is senior Max Jones. Max is another four-year starter for the Su, and he has been very consistent throughout his career. He doesn’t have the same kind of stuff as Ace, but he knows how to pitch and he always keeps his team in games. Max is a savvy veteran who will be looking to have a big senior season.

The third pitcher in the rotation is senior Tom Murphy. Tom is another experienced pitcher who has been pitching well for the last few years. He doesn’t have overpowering stuff, but he knows how to pitch and he gets results. Tom will be looking to have a big year as he tries to lead the Su to a conference title

The fourth pitcher in the rotation is junior Jake Williams. Jake is a young pitcher who has shown a lot of promise in his first two years on the team. He has great stuff, and he has been very impressive so far in his career. Jake will be looking to take another step forward this year as he tries to help lead the Su to a conference title

The Southern University Baseball Team will have a strong bullpen this season with the return of several experienced pitchers.

Headlining the group is closer Nick Zaunbrecher, who had a team-leading eight saves last season. Zaunbrecher, a senior from Baton Rouge La., has been named to the Preseason All-SWAC Second Team.

Also returning are fellow seniors Jared Padgett and Marc Skinner, who each pitched in more than 20 games last season. Skinner had a team-best 2.70 ERA in 2018, while Padgett tallied four saves.

Rounding out the bullpen are juniors Tanner Boone and Willaede Louis, as well as sophomore Gavin Scott. Boone was second on the team with seven saves last season, while Louis and Scott each appeared in more than 15 games.

The infield is the area of a baseball diamond between the bases and home plate It is composed of four positions: first baseman, second baseman, third baseman, and shortstop. A coach or manager typically assigns Defensive Players to these positions by their defensive skill set, with first base and third base requiring power hitters with good arm strength to make long throws to complete double plays; second base requiring good fielders who can catch routine pop-ups in short field; and shortstop requiring good arm strength to make long throws across the diamond on double plays.

The outfield is often considered to be the most important part of the baseball diamond The outfielders are responsible for catching fly balls and relay throws, as well as knocking extra-base hits. If you’re looking to catch a game at Merrimack College’s Warrior Stadium this season, here are some of the Key Players to keep an eye on in the outfield.

Andrew Lamm (Sr., OF): Lamm is a four-year starter who has been one of the team’s most consistent hitters throughout his career. He’s a left-handed hitter with power potential, and he should be able to provide a spark in the middle of the lineup.

Mikey Richardson (Jr., OF): Richardson is another player who has been a starter since he arrived on campus. He’s an excellent defensive outfielder with a strong arm, and he’ll be hitting near the top of the lineup.

Chris Slavin (So., OF): Slavin is a versatile player who can play all three field positions He’s coming off a strong freshman campaign in which he hit .296/.385/.432 with four home runs and he should see his role increase this season.

JP Walsh (Fr., OF): Walsh is a highly-touted freshman who was ranked as the No. 8 prospect in Massachusetts by perfect game USA. He has great speed and should be able to make an immediate impact in the leadoff spot.

The current catchers on the roster are:

-Harrison Wenson
-Spencer Torkelson
-Garrett McCain
-Drew Dickey
-Joey Bart

Designated Hitter

Designated hitter (DH) is a baseball position It was created in the American League in 1973. The role of the designated hitter is to bat in place of the pitcher. In most games, the DH bats in the cleanup spot.

The designated hitter does not play defense If the game enters Extra Innings the DH becomes just another batter and can be replaced by a pinch hitter. In National League games, there is no designated hitter and pitchers must hit for themselves.

The DH spot in the batting order can be used to rest an older player or to give a younger player a chance to get some at-bats without having to play defense. Some managers also use theDH spot to create match-ups against opposing pitchers by choosing left-handed or right-handed hitters depending on who is pitching that day.

Most teams have one primary designated hitter who bats in that spot most of the time, but some teams use a rotating DH system where different players take turns filling that role.

Mike Weathers is entering his fourth season as head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals and his 12th year in the organization. He has a career record of 1,068-1,002 (.515), including a mark of 256-210 (.550) with the Cardinals. Prior to his arrival in St. Louis, he served as the skipper at Triple-A Memphis (2005), Double-A Springfield (2004) and Single-A Palm Beach (2003).
