The Phantom of the Opera
The Phantom of the Opera is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart. The book was originally published as a serialisation in The Daily Mirror newspaper, which ran from 23 September to 8 December 1909.
The musical debuted in London’s West End in 1986, and on Broadway in 1988. It won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1988 and the Olivier Award for Best Musical in 1986. The Phantom of the Opera was the longest-running musical in Broadway history until it was surpassed by The Lion King on 6 October 2006.
The Phantom of the Opera has been adapted into several film and television productions, including a 1925 silent film starring Lon Chaney Sr., a 1943 Universal Pictures color film starring Claude Rains, and a 1990 Cinergi Pictures/Universal Pictures film starring Gerard Butler as the Phantom.
The musical Les Miserables celebrated its 25th anniversary on October 8, 2010, and Sierra Boggess and Ramin Karimloo, who played the leading roles of Fantine and Jean Valjean in the recent Broadway revival, reunited to celebrate the occasion.
Boggess and Karimloo first met when they were both cast in the 2006 concert version of Les Miz, which was performed at London’s O2 Arena to mark the musical’s 21st anniversary. They then both went on to star in the 2008 Broadway revival of the show; Boggess as Fantine and Karimloo as Valjean.
The two actors have remained close friends since their time in Les Miz, and they are both currently starring in the Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera.
Both Boggess and Karimloo expressed their happiness at being able to come together and celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Phantom of the Opera. They each shared how the musical has had a profound impact on their lives, careers, and relationship. They hope that the fans who have loved the musical for so long will continue to support it for many years to come.
