In addition to the numerous classical music venues, there are several new and notable jazz venues in Shanghai. Here is a list of some of the best places to enjoy live jazz music in the city this month.

Blue Note Shanghai: Located in the Kerry Centre, Blue Note is one of the most popular jazz clubs in the city. The club features a rotating schedule of international and local acts, and March’s lineup includes some of the biggest names in jazz.

The House of Blues and Jazz: This popular club is located in the heart of the French Concession and features a mix of local and international talent. March’s lineup includes several up-and-coming local acts as well as some well-known international names.

JZ Club: JZ Club is one of the most popular places to see live jazz in Shanghai. The club has three stages, featuring everything from solo performers to full bands. March’s lineup includes some of the best local talent as well as internationally known acts.

International acts

Looking for something different in your musical diet? Check out these three international acts playing at Shanghai jazz clubs this month.

March 5 – 7: Alan Harris Quartet at JZ Club
The German-born, Berlin-based saxophonist leads his quartet through two nights of what Harris calls “a mix of classic jazz tunes and original music.” Expect a high-energy performance with plenty of opportunity for improvisation.

March 12 – 14: Jordi Rossy Trio at Manhattan Jazz Club
Barcelona-born drummer Rossy comes to Shanghai with his trio, featuring former Miles Davis bassist Darryl Jones and pianist Brad Mehldau. The group’s first album, “Changes,” was released last year to critical acclaim. Prepare for a weekend of “formidable technique and lyrical beauty” (All About Jazz).

March 19 – 21: Django Bates’ Belovèd at The Pearl
British composer and keyboardist Bates brings his “highly entertaining and musically adventurous” (The Guardian) band Belovèd to The Pearl for three nights. The group – which features bass clarinet, trombone, tuba, and percussion in addition to more traditional jazz instruments – draws on a wide range of influences, from classical music to African drumming to pop.

There are many great Shanghai jazz albums to recommend, but here are just a few of our favorites. If you’re looking for something new to listen to, be sure to check these out.

The Jackie Brown Jazz Band is a fresh and exciting new voice in the world of jazz. Based in Shanghai, the band draws inspiration from a wide range of musical influences, from Bebop to Hip Hop. With a sound that is both unique and familiar, the Jackie Brown Jazz Band is sure to get your feet moving.

March 12 – 15: The Joe Wong Quartet

Joe Wong is a rising star in the jazz world. A virtuoso pianist, he has been captivating audiences with his inventive and energetic style of play. The Joe Wong Quartet features some of China’s best young jazz musicians, and their performances are not to be missed.
