A Quick Overview of the Team

The Rutgers Baseball Team is gearing up for another exciting season and we’ve got your first look at the roster. Head Coach Joe Litterio will be leading the Scarlet Knights into action this year, and he’ll have a strong squad at his disposal.

Here’s a quick overview of the team:

Joe D’Annunzio – A senior captain, D’Annunzio will be one of the main leaders on this year’s team. He’s a versatile player who can man any of the field positions and he’s also a dangerous hitter. Look for him to be one of the key contributors on offense.

Tommy Williams – Williams is another senior who will be counted on to provide leadership, both on and off the field. He’s a great Defensive Player with a strong arm, and he’s also capable of putting up some good numbers at the plate.

John Baker – A junior transfer from Seton Hall Baker figures to be one of the starting infielders this season. He’s a solid all-around player who should be able to contribute in all phases of the game.

Nick Cieri – One of the top power hitters in college baseball Cieri is somebody that opposing pitchers will have to watch out for. He missed part of last season with an injury, but he’s fully healthy now and ready to make an impact.

Mike Carter – A gifted athlete, Carter is one of the fastest players on the team. He’ll likely be used as a pinch-runner or defensive replacement late in games, but he could also see some time in the outfield if needed.

The Infield

The infield is the portion of the baseball diamond enclosed by the bases and the three infielders. Generally, the first baseman, second baseman, and third baseman are considered the infielders, while the shortstop is considered to be part of both the infield and the outfield.

The Outfield

The Outfield is looking good this year. The team returns two all-conference players in outfielders Mike Carter and Steve Frese.

The team will also have some good depth in the outfield with the addition of freshman John Wilkins and junior college transfer Matt Zielinski.

The Starting Rotation

Rutgers will have a new-look starting rotation in 2020, as three of the team’s five pitchers who started at least eight games last season have graduated. head coach Steve Owens will look to a mix of experienced arms and newcomers to lead the charge on the mound this year.

The Scarlet Knights will be led by senior right-hander Jonathan Baez, who made 13 starts and pitched to a 3.95 ERA last season. Baez will be joined in the rotation by Junior College transfer Mattew White, who was named a preseason All-American by perfect game USA. Youngsters Nick Mohammed and Dan Metzdorf round out the starting rotation, as both pitchers showed promise in limited action last season.

The Bullpen

The Scarlet Knights’ bullpen will be anchored by two experienced seniors in right-hander Alec Haste and left-hander Grant Reuben. Both pitchers had strong junior seasons and will provide a steadying influence for the younger pitchers on the team.

Right-hander Jesse Carter and left-hander Connor Larkin will also be key contributors out of the bullpen. Carter is a hard-throwing reliever who can work multiple innings, while Larkin is a crafty lefty who specializes in getting left-handed hitters out.

Freshmen right-handers Kyle Resnisky and Camillo Spinoso round out the bullpen. Resnisky is a hard-throwing strikeout artist, while Spinoso is a ground ball specialist who uses his sinker to get batters out.

The Coaching Staff

Rutgers Baseball is led by Head Coach Steve Owens. He is entering his third season as the Scarlet Knights’ Head coach Prior to Rutgers, Owens spent four seasons as an Assistant Coach at the University of Pittsburgh.

Owens is joined by pitching coach Kevin Lillis and assistant coaches Joe Litterio and John Soldinger. Lillis enters his first season with the Scarlet Knights after spending the previous two years as the head coach of Division II Mercyhurst College. Litterio returns for his seventh season at Rutgers and Soldinger is in his fourth season with the program.
