Rosalia’s Beginnings

Rosalia Vila Tobella was born on 25 September 1993 in Sant Feliu de Llobregat, a town near Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain. Her father is a Catalan musician and her mother is from Andalusia. From an early age, she was exposed to a wide range of music, including traditional Catalan music, Spanish copla, Andalusian flamenco, and Latin American music. She began to take singing lessons when she was eight years old. In 2010, she won a contest organised by the television channel TV3, which gave her the opportunity to record a song with the Catalan rapper Mala Rodríguez.

Rosalía Vila Tobella, known mononymously as Rosalía, is a Spanish singer, songwriter, record producer and occasional actress. Born and raised in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, a town north of Barcelona, Rosalía found initial success singing songs in the flamenco style. She first gained mainstream attention in 2017 for her tribute single to Spanish singer Camarón de la Isla, “Malamente”, which propelled her to fame throughout Spain and Latin America. In 2019, Rosalía released her second studio album El mal querer to critical acclaim; the album’s title track won the Latin Grammy Award for Record of the Year, making Rosalía the first woman since 1997 to win the award as a solo act.

Rosalia’s musical influences come from a range of sources. As a child she was exposed to traditional Flamenco music by her family, but she also listened to contemporary pop and Hip Hop artists such as Shakira and Aaliyah. Outside of her family’s music collection, she enjoyed singing along with nursery rhymes on TV and radio. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she recalled being particularly drawn to Whitney Houston ballads. When asked about her favorite artist growing up, she said “It was between Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson”.
