Heavy Metal Music

Loughborough University in England has become the first university in the world to offer a heavy metal music class, which will be taught by leading academics in the field. The class, called “Heavy Metal: History, Culture and Production”, will explore the history and culture of metal music, and will also teach students how to produce their own metal music.

Definition

Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. The heavy metal guitar sound comes from a combined use of high volumes and distortion. Guitarists play power chords with distortion to create a heavier sound.

Heavy metal is traditionally characterized by loudness, aggressive musicianship, and a thickly produced sound. Heavy metal subgenres variously emphasize, alter, or omit one or more of these attributes. New York Times critic Jon Pareles writes that “heavy metal’s main subject matter is simple and almost always manly: purgatory and hell, God versus Satan, good against evil”. Metal has branched out into subgenres that include niche markets such as death metal (featuring growling vocals and forward-looking styles) power metal (which focuses on speed whereas many have intricate song structures), and black metal (which tends to be characterized by heavily distorted guitars playing fast-paced riffs with shrieked vocals).

History

Heavy metal music has its roots in rock and roll, and came to prominence in the late 1960s and early 1970s with bands such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Aerosmith and Kiss. The genre is characterized by loud, distorted guitars, aggressive vocals and pounding drums.

Heavy metal music has always been a controversial genre, with its dark lyrics and suggestive imagery often accused of glorifying violence and drugs. In the 1980s, the Parents Music Resource Center campaigned for the labeling of albums with offensive content, leading to the now-familiar “Parental Advisory” sticker.

Despite its controversial reputation, heavy metal music has continued to be popular with audiences around the world. In recent years, there has even been a resurgence of interest in classic heavy metal bands, with many older groups touring and releasing new albums.

If you’re a fan of heavy metal music or are curious about the genre, you can now study it at Loughborough University in England. The university is offering a module called “ heavy Metal: History and Culture” as part of its undergraduate music degree program.

The course will explore the history of heavy metal music from its roots in rock and roll to its present-day popularity. It will also look at the impact of the genre on popular culture, including fashion, film and television.
